KERAKOLL GROUP arrives in India, with the inauguration of three new logistics centres in Mumbai, Bangalore and Salem

Annual turnover when fully operational in India is expected to equal 5 million Euros.

Work has started on the new terminal at Delhi International Airport.



Kerakoll Group, a world leader in products and services for sustainable building, historical restoration and interior design, increases its international presence and arrives in India, with the inauguration of three new logistics centres, directed by Hemant K. Jain, a local manager with considerable experience in the sector.

The main headquarters in Mumbai, with offices and warehouses giving a total area of over 1,000 m2, is backed by an additional logistics centre at Bangalore and by a further distribution centre in Salem, giving the Group a widespread presence within the territory so as to guarantee quality in terms of delivery times and technical assistance.
 
The Indian sales network, which has a workforce of 45, is estimated to produce an annual turnover of approximately 5 million Euros when fully operational, thanks to the high potential of the local market.

The building sector in India has seen considerable growth over recent years, following heavy investment in residential building (which represents over 74% of the market), together with non-residential building and public expenditure in infrastructure.

The lack of housing, the need for the redevelopment of a large part of existing buildings, the lack of infrastructure and the need for commercial and industrial premises are the main factors behind this development in the building and infrastructure sector in India.

In particular, according to the estimates drawn up by the National Building Association, by 2021 it is calculated that there will be a need for 77 million residential housing units in urban areas, and over 63 million in country areas.

With reference to non-residential development, in the eight main cities the demand for office space has risen from 3.5 million sq ft in 1998 to 16 million sq ft in 2004, and reached 85 million sq ft in 2008. The demand is mainly concentrated in the so-called Central Business Districts of Mumbai and Delhi, although there is also considerable growth in other cities such as Bangalore, Gurgaon, Hyderabad, Chennai, Kolkata.

Likewise there is great interest in infrastructure and large projects, with an expected investment of 500 billion dollars over the next five years in energy, ports, roads, underground rail networks, and goods transport by rail.

It is in this context that Kerakoll has become involved in the construction of the new Terminal 3 at Indira Gandhi International Airport in Delhi, managed by GMR, one of the most important infrastructure companies in the Country, through the joint venture DIAL (Delhi International Airport Limited), which has been set up to extend the airport itself and run it for 30 years, and has assigned planning to HOK, an organisation that operates in 24 countries with a staff of over 2,000.

The plan is to bring the airport’s handling capacity from the current 20 million up to 60 million passengers per year, also creating a new runway, and the main operation is the construction of a new 250,000 m2 Terminal, which alone will be capable of handling 34 million passengers per year and 55 aircraft.

Completion of the work, which has just started, is expected to take place on 31st March 2010, just in time for the Commonwealth Games, which are to be held the following October, for the first time in India and for the second time in Asia.

The idea behind the plans for Terminal 3 is to create an environment with muted colours that is mainly illuminated by natural light. The arrivals area in particular has been designed to give a truly memorable welcome to India.

Great attention has been given to the flooring. The material selected is natural stone, which will give the feel required for the project: approximately 100,000 m2 will be made of granite from Barhain, Saudi Bianco, with inserts in Indian Kashmiri Gold and GB4 granites, all in 80x80 cm slabs.

To carry out the work, the Kerakoll India team supported GMR’s planners by means of site and laboratory tests so as to recommend the best possible laying cycle; a number of tests were also carried out in the Kerakoll research and development centre to evaluate the behaviour of the local stones and sand, adhesion to the stones, the bearing characteristics and resistances of the screed and finally the performance of the entire system when laid.

Today, over 40% of the turnover for the Kerakoll Group is produced abroad, and this international role is destined to increase further still: the recent opening of commercial branches in Sweden, Portugal, Croatia and Hungary has brought the number of Countries in which the Group is present up to 15: in Spain, Poland and Greece the Group already boasts a direct presence with manufacturing plants, while in the remaining Countries the commercial presence is achieved through local partnerships or trading companies.

The international dimension of the company also emerges in the makeup of our management team. On the world markets the majority of managers are selected locally: at the head of the branches in USA, Singapore, Great Britain, Portugal, Sweden and Hungary there are managers from those specific geographical areas.
