Kerakoll: one of the ‘made in Italy’ companies nominated for the Award for Sustainable Development 2011

16th November 2011

Ecomondo, the international trade fair for the recovery of materials and energy, and sustainable development that was held in Rimini from 9th to 12th November 2011, was the venue where the Award for Sustainable Development 2011 was given: an award recognising companies that work towards sustainable development, promoted by the Foundation for Sustainable Development, and by Ecomondo, with the endorsement of the President of the Italian Republic.

Kerakoll Spa was among the 10 companies nominated for this award in the innovative products and services category, for their GreenBuilding Rating; the certified standard used to measure the sustainability performances of building materials and to direct the design and construction of eco-friendly buildings.

Gian Luca Sghedoni, CEO of Kerakoll commented on the recognition: ”The plaque received for this important award goes to all of our organisation, that for years has been committed to the development of eco-friendly construction products that protect the environment, guarantee good health, wellbeing and living comfort, and reduce energy consumption. It is also thanks to the investment of serious companies like ours, that an indispensable collective conscience has been created to safeguard our planet”.

Since 2000 Kerakoll has been working on a policy in favour of environmental sustainability, promoting corporate choices and lines of behaviour that are compatible with the aim of safeguarding the planet’s resources and the health of its inhabitants. In particular, thanks to an innovative research programme and investments in green research amounting to 5.4% of the company turnover, Kerakoll has developed new generation products with superior technical performance, a low environmental impact and capable of improving health and quality of life.

Thanks to this commitment, Kerakoll, over these years, has received numerous national and international awards, among the most recent have been the December 2010 Legambiente GreenLife Award, a prestigious national prize given for company innovation in the environmental field, and the TTA award, in June 2011 in England, from the Tile Association for the best environmental initiative.

Kerakoll’s Sassuolo Green Lab, the futuristic Research Centre that will encompass 9 advanced Green Technology development labs, is part of the strengthening of the green mission and will be operating in spring 2012. Designed and built entirely with GreenBuilding materials and technology, the Kerakoll GreenLab is one of the first examples in Europe of an industrial building with low-environmental impact, extreme living comfort, and high energy efficiency.

Kerakoll is the world leader in the GreenBuilding products and services sector, with a turnover of € 335 million in 2010 (approximately 40% of which came from foreign sales), 12 operating companies and 10 manufacturing plants.

Kerakoll was founded in 1968 in Sassuolo, in the heart of the worldwide ceramic industry, on the entrepreneurial initiative of Romano Sghedoni. The Group is managed by Gian Luca Sghedoni – the founder’s son and national winner of the Ernst&Young ‘2008 Entrepreneur of the Year’ award. He is supported by an executive team which unites technical experience and know-how with an innovative and highly managerial approach.
