How to tile onto raised access flooring

Tiling to raised access flooring system diagram: H40 Extreme adhesive, Biotex reinforcement membrane, H40 Extreme adhesive, tiles, Fugabella Color grout, Silicone Color sealant

With so many office-to-residential conversions happening post COVID, a lot of you are finding yourselves tiling onto raised access floors. Here’s a system that works every time, plus it’s quick to install, the finished installation has a low profile, and all the products have very low VOC emissions, which is good for your health.

1. Reinforce

You need to reinforce the platform before laying the tiles, so start by applying Biotex, Kerakoll’s reinforced anti-fracture membrane. This is made from recycled thermo-bonded polyester, and designed to absorb movement and stresses between the metal substrate and the tiles. It’s only 0.65mm thick, so it adds barely anything to the height of the finished floor.

Fix it with H40 Extreme: this is a hybrid gel-adhesive that bonds anything even in the most extreme working conditions.
It is about 500% stronger than a typical C2 adhesive after 24 hours, and ten times more flexible too with over 50mm of deformation. Plus, it’s nice and easy to spread as it is five times less viscous than a standard polyurethane adhesive.

It doesn’t contain epoxy resin and is totally solvent-free, non-toxic, and non-hazardous; good for you and good for the environment.

2. Tile

Once the H40 Extreme has set (after about 4 hours), it’s time to start tiling.

Use H40 Extreme again to fix your tiles. This keeps everything consistent and guarantees you won’t run into compatibility problems later.

3. Grout

Once the adhesive has set, use Fugabella Color to grout. This is a hybrid resin-cement grout, which you can walk on after about 3 hours.
It’s available in 50 colours, so you can match the grout to the tiles. It’s great to use, easy to mix and spread. It’s also much tougher than standard cement grouts.

4. Seal

Finally, seal all expansion joints with Silicone Color. It’s colour-matched to Fugabella Color so you’ll get a seamless finish. It’s low on VOCs and has hardly any solvent in it (≤ 5g/kg), keeping things cleaner and greener on site.
